The Farmers Party, now led by former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, has given a 30-day notice to leave the Kenya Kwanza coalition, citing mistrust and exclusion from key decisions.
In a letter dated Tuesday, April 8, the party’s Secretary General Simon Kamangu said the move was approved during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Monday, April 7.
“The National Executive Committee of the Farmers Party met on 7th April 2025 and unanimously resolved on the subject matter. Therefore, the Farmers Party hereby issues a thirty (30) day notice of intention to exit the Kenya Kwanza Coalition, pursuant to Clause 8 (Termination) of the Coalition Agreement. This notice takes effect from the date of this letter,” read the letter in part.
Kamangu accused the ruling coalition of political dishonesty and failing to respect the Constitution and the coalition agreement.
He particularly criticized the recent agreement between President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga, claiming the Farmers Party was not consulted.
“The recent unilateral signing of a Broad-Based Government Agreement between the Kenya Kwanza Coalition and the ODM Party without consultation or involvement of the Kenya Kwanza constituent parties such as ours is the final confirmation of the political conmanship that has come to define the coalition,” he said.
This announcement comes shortly after former Farmers Party leader Irungu Nyakera was dismissed by President Ruto from his role as board chair of the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC). He was replaced by Samuel Waweru Mwangi.
The Farmers Party leadership changed hands in February, with the Registrar of Political Parties confirming that Ferdinand Waititu had taken over from Irungu Nyakera.
Other leadership changes included the appointment of John Wambugu to replace Brian Kigochi in the policy and strategy docket. However, Nicholas Ikui remained Deputy Party Leader for Resource Mobilisation, while Thomas Omboga retained his position as National Chairperson.
