Gordon Brown, born James Gordon Brown on 20 February 1951 in Giffnock, near Glasgow, Scotland, is a British Labour Party politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 2007 to 2010 and as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1997 to 2007.

Often described as a “son of the manse,” he is the son of Church of Scotland minister John Ebenezer Brown and Jessie Elizabeth “Bunty” Souter.

He grew up mainly in Kirkcaldy, Fife, after the family moved there when he was three.

Brown is known for his long tenure at the Treasury during a period of sustained economic growth, his leadership during the 2008 global financial crisis, and his subsequent international roles focused on education and global health.

    Siblings

Gordon has two brothers. His elder brother, John Brown, was born in 1948, and his younger brother, Andrew Brown, was born after the family settled in Kirkcaldy.

The three brothers were raised together in the manse, the official residence provided for their father’s ministry, in an environment shaped by Presbyterian values, community service, and a strong sense of social duty.

Their father, a minister who had worked in the deprived area of Govan in Glasgow, instilled in them a commitment to treating people equally and helping those in need.

John later worked as a public relations consultant in Glasgow, while Andrew became Head of Media Relations in the UK for the utility company EDF Energy.

    Career

Brown entered the University of Edinburgh at the age of 16, one of the youngest students to do so since the Second World War, and graduated with a first-class honours degree in history in 1972.

He later completed a PhD on the history of the Labour Party in Scotland in 1982.

While still a student he was elected the youngest-ever Rector of Edinburgh University, serving from 1972 to 1975.

He worked as a lecturer at Edinburgh University and then at Glasgow College of Technology, and later as a journalist and current-affairs editor at Scottish Television.

Elected as Member of Parliament for Dunfermline East in 1983, he later represented Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath following boundary changes.

He held a series of shadow cabinet posts, culminating in the role of Shadow Chancellor.

After Labour’s landslide victory in 1997 he became Chancellor of the Exchequer, a position he held for a decade – the longest continuous tenure in modern British history.

In that role he granted the Bank of England independence to set interest rates and oversaw a prolonged period of economic growth.

He succeeded Tony Blair as Labour leader and Prime Minister in June 2007.

His premiership was dominated by the global financial crisis of 2008, during which he coordinated international responses, including the London G20 summit.

After Labour’s defeat in the 2010 general election he resigned as prime minister and later stood down as an MP.

In subsequent years he has served as United Nations Special Envoy for Global Education and as WHO Ambassador for Global Health Financing.

    Accolades

Brown is widely recognised as Britain’s longest-serving modern Chancellor of the Exchequer.

His handling of the 2008–2009 financial crisis, particularly the measures taken to stabilise the banking system and the leadership shown at the London G20 summit, is frequently cited as a major achievement that helped avert a deeper global depression.

He has received several honorary doctorates from universities including Edinburgh, Glasgow, Abertay and the Open University, as well as a number of international awards.

In the 2024 King’s Birthday Honours he was appointed a Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour.

He is also the author of several books on politics, economics and global challenges, further contributing to his public profile after leaving office.
