WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps for sharing media, but it has a file size limit for videos. Currently, the maximum file size you can send is 16 MB for direct sharing in chats and 2 GB for documents, which can still be restrictive if your video is too long or high-quality. If you need to send a large video, there are several ways to make it work without losing too much quality. Knowing the right method can save you time and ensure your video reaches the recipient without complications. Here is how to send a large video on WhatsApp.
- Compress the Video
One of the easiest ways to send a large video is to compress it. You can use apps such as Video Compressor, InShot, or VLC Media Player to reduce the file size without sacrificing too much quality. Compression works by lowering the resolution or bitrate of the video. For example, changing from 4K to 1080p or 720p can significantly reduce size. Once compressed, you can send it through WhatsApp without hitting the file size limit. - Send as a Document
Instead of sending your video directly as media, you can send it as a document. This method allows you to share videos up to 2 GB in size. To do this, tap the attachment icon, select “Document” instead of “Gallery,” and choose your video file from your phone’s storage. This avoids automatic compression by WhatsApp and preserves more of the original quality. - Use Cloud Storage Links
If your video is too big even for the document option, you can upload it to cloud services like Google Drive, Dropbox, or OneDrive. Once uploaded, copy the shareable link and send it through WhatsApp. The recipient can click the link to download or watch the video in full quality without size restrictions. This is especially useful for lengthy videos like event recordings or high-resolution clips. - Trim or Split the Video
If the large file size is due to video length, you can trim unnecessary parts or split it into smaller segments. Many phone gallery apps and video editors allow you to cut your video into sections that fit within WhatsApp’s size limit. This way, you send multiple shorter clips that still cover the full content. - Lower the Resolution Before Recording
If you know in advance that you will send the video via WhatsApp, you can set your camera to record in a lower resolution. For instance, recording in 1080p instead of 4K reduces file size and avoids the need for heavy compression later.
