How Zidane Found Himself Back At Madrid

Zidane’s exit at Madrid was due to a disagreement with the club over the future of the current squad. The Frenchman was convinced that Los Blancos needed a massive overhaul while the board held a contrary opinion.

10 months later, the 46-year old is vindicated with the board eating a humble pie. He returns at Santiago Bernabue, not initially as a first choice to take over from Santiago Solari but as the last option.

The 13-time European champions had mapped former boss, Jose Mourinho for the role. The Portuguese’ appointment was put on halt after senior squad members felt uncomfortable with Mourinho. The impossibility of bringing Mauricio Pochettino or Jurgen Klopp from their respective clubs at the end of the season was also a major decision to be regarded.

The La Liga giants needed immediate action to rescue the club from more blushes. Only one option prevailed, Zinedine Zidane. But his arrival was conditional. The 1998 World Cup winner with France had to be enticed with £300m transfer budget in the Summer to accept reappointment. With such amount, Zizzou is assured of making major changes in the squad by June.

Luka Modric and Gareth Bale are likely to leave. The three-time UCL winning coach has identified key targets; Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, Tottenham’s playmaker Eriksen and plans to raid Paris Saint-Germain for either Kylian Mbappe or Neymar Jr.
