Interior CS Gives Update On Patient Killed At Kenyatta Hospital

Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has given an update on the ongoing investigations into the mysterious death of Gilbert Kinyu Muthoni at Kenyatta National Hospital.

Muthoni was killed on February 7, 2025, inside the hospital’s Neurology Ward, Level 7B, male section.

The incident was reported at Capitol Hill Police Station, prompting the Homicide Investigation Bureau and a forensic team from the DCI lab to take over the case.

According to Murkomen, the victim was found with a deep cut on his throat, and his beddings were soaked in blood.

Blood trails were found leading from Muthoni’s bed to the bed of another patient in the same room. Investigators also found suspected blood stains on a pair of black crocks and fingernails belonging to the patient who shared the room with the deceased.

A blood-stained kitchen knife with a plastic handle was later discovered on a rooftop near the ward, in direct view from the victim’s room.

All suspected blood samples were swabbed and submitted to the Government Chemist for forensic analysis.

Statements were recorded from key witnesses, including nurses, security officers, a cleaner, and another patient in the ward. CCTV footage from Ward 7B was also retrieved for review.

A postmortem was conducted on February 20, 2025, and additional samples were collected for DNA and toxicology testing.

Preliminary results released on February 25 confirmed that the DNA from the knife and floor matched the victim’s profile. However, no foreign DNA was found on the fingernail clippings or crocks.

The DNA profile of the other patient in the room was not detected in any of the samples. Forensic analysis of other submitted exhibits is still ongoing.

Murkomen told MPs that once the investigation is complete, the case file will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for review and action.

“The investigations are ongoing and once finalized, any person found culpable will be arraigned in court,” said the CS.

He further urged hospitals to develop clear safety and security guidelines to protect patients and staff. He proposed the installation of CCTV cameras and security scanners in healthcare facilities.

Murkomen added that police have enhanced security presence in hospitals and that DCI is fast-tracking the investigation into Muthoni’s killing.
