Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Burat Ward in Isiolo County Nicholas Lorot sustained gunshot wounds after an attack by unknown assailants on Wednesday March 26 evening.
Police and his family said he is in stable condition in the hospital after the gun attack.
The motive of the attack is yet to be established, police said.
The MCA was reportedly shot in Isiolo town before being rushed to St. Theresa Mission Hospital in Kiirua, Meru County for medical attention.
His colleagues later visited him at the facility.
Lorot, an outspoken figure in Isiolo’s political landscape, is known to be frequently at odds with Governor Abdi Guyo’s administration on key governance and resource allocation matters.
He is also actively involved in advocating for community land rights, which has often seen him engage in heated disputes with both county officials and private developers.
While the motive behind the attack remains unclear, the incident has sparked speculation among residents and leaders, with some calling for a thorough investigation into whether the shooting was politically motivated.
Police said they are investigating the incident. A team investigating the attack said no arrest had been made.
Meanwhile, police were forced to shoot in efforts to arrest escaping aliens on the main Isiolo-Marsabit highway.
The incident happened on Gotrupa Bulesa Road in Merti.
According to police, they managed to first arrest four Ethiopians.
After a brief interrogation, they revealed there were 20 others who were hiding in bushes around the place.
This prompted a search before a motorcycle emerged from a bush and rode off. Police shot at the rider and his pillion passengers in vain.
They are said to be the main human smugglers operating in the area. Police said a search for the other missing aliens is ongoing.
Tens of Ethiopians use the route while en route to the Middle East and South Africa. Some are arrested while managing to sneak in and out with the help of smugglers.
Regional countries have been making arrests as part of efforts to tame the trend.
