Bomet Central MP  Ronald Toni has revealed that cartels allied to State house Operatives bribe some legislators to pass the 1.5% housing levy.

He said that the levy did not go through their committees as other government projects instead it was sneaked into the Finance bill which was erroneously passed.

The Bomet Central legislator said that most of his colleagues did not support the government’s plan to slash salaries of Kenyans to support the housing project.

We rejected it and our number was even higher but it is unfortunate some individuals tampered with the voting systems giving way for the manual system and that is where we were defeated,” Tonui told the Star.

He said that parliament had stopped being an avenue to support  the will of the people but had turned into a hub of business with legislators who only minded their selfish interests.

The government had last week stated that employers and employees were to start submitting the 1.5% housing levy at the end of April.

The move was opposed by the Federation of Kenyan employees. The court put the deduction on hold.

Most Kenyans we’re opposed to the tax stating that the money would end up with unscrupulous people.

They also said that the same would be unfair to those already paying mortgages and home owners.
