Philip Haywood Glenister, born on February 10, 1963, in Harrow, Middlesex, England, is a renowned English actor celebrated for his compelling performances in television and film.

Raised in Hatch End, north-west London, he is the son of television director John Glenister and Joan Fry Lewis.

His early exposure to the entertainment industry came through his family’s involvement in the arts, though he initially pursued a career behind the camera.

Glenister’s journey into acting was sparked by watching his older brother perform, and with encouragement from his then-sister-in-law, actress Amanda Redman, he trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama.

    Siblings

Philip has one sibling, his older brother Robert Glenister, born on March 11, 1960, in Watford, Hertfordshire.

Robert is also a distinguished actor, best known for his role as con man Ash “Three Socks” Morgan in the BBC drama Hustle and as Nicholas Blake in the spy series Spooks.

The brothers share a close familial bond, rooted in their suburban, non-showbiz upbringing, as Philip once described their childhood home as a community where their parents’ friends were lifelong schoolmates.

Robert’s early passion for acting inspired Philip, who initially hesitated to follow the same path, fearing it might overwhelm their parents to have two actors in the family.

Despite their parallel careers, the brothers have only collaborated once, in a 2016 Radio 4 adaptation of Sam Shepard’s play True West, directed by Robert’s wife, Celia de Wolff.

    Career

Glenister’s career spans over three decades, marked by a diverse range of roles in television, film, and theater.

After graduating from the Central School of Speech and Drama, he began with small television roles in the early 1990s, appearing in series such as Minder, The Ruth Rendell Mysteries, and Heartbeat.

His breakthrough came with the BBC series Life on Mars (2006–2007), where his portrayal of the brash, politically incorrect DCI Gene Hunt earned widespread acclaim.

He reprised the role in Ashes to Ashes (2008–2010), cementing his status as a television icon.

Glenister’s collaboration with co-star John Simm extended to other projects, including State of Play (2003), Clocking Off (2000–2002), Mad Dogs (2011–2013), and the crime film Tuesday (2008).

His film credits include Calendar Girls (2003), where he played a photographer, and Kingdom of Heaven (2005).

Glenister has also taken on diverse television roles, such as the social reformer Mr. Carter in Cranford (2007), demon hunter Rupert Galvin in Demons (2009), and Reverend Anderson in Outcast (2016–2018), showcasing his ability to adapt to different genres.

Beyond acting, he presented the Channel 4 series For the Love of Cars (2014–2015), restoring classic cars, and authored a book, Things Ain’t What They Used to Be, exploring 1970s and 1980s culture, published in 2008.

His theater work includes productions like Romeo & Juliet (1991) and This House (2012).
