Police are investigating the killing of a night watchman during a break-in at a boarding school in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County.

The incident occurred at Three Angels Adventist School in the Bondeni area and was reported on Wednesday.

According to police, the incident was reported by the school’s matron after students discovered that several water taps had been vandalised while fetching water at around 4:05 a.m.

The matron began searching for the school’s night watchman, Julius Masinde, 39, and found him lying face down in a pool of blood behind the school’s parking area.

Police officers visited the scene and established that unknown intruders had gained entry into the school compound, vandalised eight water taps and were confronted by the watchman.

Investigators believe a violent struggle ensued, during which Masinde sustained multiple deep cut wounds to the head, leading to his death.

The suspects are believed to have escaped through the school’s perimeter fence, with investigators noting drops of blood on the fence, suggesting some of the attackers may have been injured during the confrontation.

The murder weapon was not recovered. However, detectives collected several exhibits from the scene, including a vandalised water tap, a catapult, a muffin and a wrapped handle suspected to belong to a sharp weapon.

Crime scene investigators documented and processed the scene before the body was moved to Kijana Wamalwa Hospital Mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

Detectives from DCI Trans Nzoia West are investigating the murder and the school break-in.

Police said no arrest had been made by Thursday and added they were pursuing good leads into the murder.

And a 34-year-old casual labourer died after being electrocuted while working at a construction site in Utange, Kisauni Sub-County, Mombasa County.

The victim, identified as James Makau, had reported to work on Wednesday morning at a construction site in the Utange Petro area when the incident occurred.

According to police, at about 9:00 a.m., Makau was carrying a metal rod when it came into contact with a naked electricity wire along a Kenya Power (KPLC) wayleave, resulting in a fatal electric shock that threw him to the ground.

The site’s foreman, assisted by three other casual labourers, rushed him to Coast General Hospital’s Utange facility. However, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

His body was later transferred to the Coast General Hospital Mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

Police said the Kenya Power emergency response team was notified, and investigations into the incident are underway.
