A 25-year-old tenant was found dead after a suspected suicide incident in Obama estate, Kayole, Nairobi.

The body of Shelton Owino was found in his rented house, police said adding he stayed alone. The victim hanged himself on the window using a belt. The deceased had a girlfriend who had been visiting.

The woman was away in college at the time of the incident. She told police they had differences but were talking. This is after police reached out to her seeking to establish the possible motive of the incident. She was in college in Kiambu Town when the incident happened on May 15.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and other investigations.

Elsewhere in Ekerenyo, Nyamira County, one Evans Makori Nyachiro, a resident of Ikonge Township died by suicide by hanging himself using a scarf tied around his neck from one of the roof rafters inside his rental house.

No suicide note was recovered at the scene and the motive is yet to be established. The body was removed to the mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Cases of suicide have been on the rise amid calls for action to address the trend. Police say the trend has been worrying and increasing with up to two cases are reported daily.

The World Health Organisation says such cases are attributed to joblessness, death, academic failures or pressures, legal difficulties and financial difficulties.

Other reasons are bullying, previous suicide attempts, history of suicide in a family, alcoholism and substance misuse, depression and bipolar disorder.

Meanwhile, a suspect was stoned to death in a botched robbery incident in Kabujoi, Nandi County.

The incident happened in Chemong village and involved one Stephen Mmaitsi, 27 who was stoned to death after being found in possession of suspected stolen goods.

Police discourage mob lynching and term it criminal. Efforts to address the trend are ongoing, authorities say.
