Toby Samuel is a British professional tennis player born on 6 September 2002 in Winchester, Hampshire, and raised in St Leonards, Dorset.
He plays right-handed with a two-handed backhand and currently resides in Bath, Somerset, where he trains as part of Team Bath Tennis.
He began playing tennis at a young age at local clubs before developing his game at the West Hants Club.
He also showed early talent in football as part of AFC Bournemouth’s academy and in swimming as a Dorset county champion in breaststroke.
Samuel studied sports management at the University of South Carolina and is a supporter of Southampton Football Club.
Siblings
Toby grew up with two brothers in a sporty family based around Bournemouth.
His older brother Ben, born around 2001, is a competitive swimmer who trained in Bournemouth Collegiate School’s national squad programme.
Ben achieved success as an English age-group champion in the 100m and 200m freestyle.
He also earned national titles in biathlon and biathle and reached the final of the 50m butterfly at a National Summer Meet.
His younger brother Rafe, born around 2008, followed Toby into tennis and trained alongside him at the West Hants Club.
As a junior, Rafe won county titles in under-12 singles and doubles.
He also claimed regional and national junior successes, including a first national title at the Nottingham Open.

Career
Samuel’s junior career included reaching the boys’ doubles semi-finals at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships with Arthur Fery.
He achieved a career-high junior ranking of world No. 56. He then competed for the University of South Carolina from 2020.
During his college career, he earned All-American honours in doubles and singles in one year.
He won the All-American Doubles title with Connor Thomson and helped the pair become the top-ranked collegiate doubles team.
Samuel turned fully professional around 2025 after college. He had overcome a significant arm injury that limited him in 2024 before producing a rapid rise through the rankings.
He claimed multiple ATP Challenger titles, including his first at the Soma Bay Open, and enjoyed long winning streaks.
In 2026, he reached an ATP Tour semi-final at the Lexus Eastbourne Open. He also made his Grand Slam singles main-draw debut at the 2026 French Open after qualifying.
He subsequently made his Wimbledon singles main-draw debut via a wildcard.
Samuel has also competed in doubles at Wimbledon, reaching the second round in 2023. As of mid-to-late 2026, he holds a career-high ATP singles ranking of No. 109 and ranks among Britain’s top players.
Accolades
Samuel has collected several notable honours throughout his career. In juniors, he reached the Wimbledon boys’ doubles semi-finals.
At college level, he was a multi-time All-American and part of a No. 1-ranked doubles team.
On the professional circuit, he has won multiple ATP Challenger singles titles and ITF titles.
Representing Great Britain at the 2025 Rhine-Ruhr World University Games, he earned silver medals in men’s singles and the team event.
Additional highlights include his first ATP Tour semi-final appearance, successful Grand Slam qualifying and main-draw participation, and steady climbs into the top 150 and beyond in the ATP rankings.
