Two directors of Flexitech Group Limited have been arrested over the alleged theft of Sh31.2 million belonging to a leading retail chain.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the suspects, Martin Kariuki Maina and Johnson Gituma Mwangi, were arrested by detectives from the DCI Nairobi Regional Office in the Roysambu area.

The arrests followed investigations into a complaint filed by the retailer over the alleged loss of the funds.

According to the DCI, the two suspects are directors of Flexitech Group Limited and agents of the complainant.

Investigators established that the suspects allegedly received Sh31,213,700.95 from customers who had purchased and collected goods from various branches of the retail chain.

The money had been entrusted to the suspects for onward remittance to the retailer.

However, detectives allege that Maina and Mwangi, acting jointly with other suspects who are still at large, diverted the funds for their own use.

The DCI said the alleged diversion was in breach of the trust placed in the suspects in their capacity as agents of the retailer.

The two suspects remained in police custody as detectives processed them ahead of their arraignment at the Milimani Law Courts on Wednesday.

They are expected to face charges of stealing by agent, contrary to Section 283(b) of the Penal Code.

The charge relates to allegations that the suspects unlawfully converted funds entrusted to them in their capacity as agents.

The DCI said investigations into the matter remain ongoing as detectives pursue other individuals believed to have been involved in the alleged multimillion-shilling theft.

“The investigations remain ongoing, with detectives pursuing other individuals believed to be linked to the multimillion-shilling theft,” the DCI said.
