    Early Life

Rebbie Jackson was born Maureen Reillette Jackson on May 29, 1950, in Gary, Indiana. She is the first of ten children born to Joe Jackson and Katherine Jackson. Her siblings include well-known performers such as Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Jermaine Jackson, and La Toya Jackson.

Raised in a musical household, Rebbie grew up taking piano, clarinet, and dance lessons. She attended Theodore Roosevelt High School in Gary, graduating in 1968. Like the rest of her family, she was raised as a Jehovah’s Witness by her mother.

    Career Beginnings

Rebbie began performing professionally in 1974, appearing in shows in Las Vegas alongside her siblings. During this time, her brothers—Jackie Jackson, Tito Jackson, Jermaine Jackson, Marlon Jackson, and Michael Jackson—were already famous as the Jackson 5.

In 1976, the group left Motown and signed with CBS Records, rebranding as The Jacksons. Several members of the family then starred in the CBS variety program The Jacksons, which aired from 1976 to 1977 and became the first television variety show to feature an African-American family.

    Solo Music Career

Rebbie Jackson began focusing on a solo music career in the late 1970s. She worked as a backing vocalist for various performers and appeared in cabaret shows before securing a recording contract with Columbia Records.

Her debut album Centipede was released in 1984 and reached #13 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The title track, written and produced by Michael Jackson, became her biggest hit.

She later released additional albums, including:

    • Reaction (1986) – featuring collaborations with Robin Zander and Isaac Hayes
    • R U Tuff Enuff (1988) – which included the singles “Plaything” and the title track
    • Yours Faithfully (1998) – released through MJJ Music, the label founded by her brother Michael Jackson

The album’s title track reached #40 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. After its release, Jackson stepped back from recording but continued to perform occasionally.

    Later Career

In 1995, Rebbie recorded a cover of Forever Young, originally written by Bob Dylan, for the film Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home.

Following the 2009 death of Michael Jackson, Rebbie and her siblings performed at his public memorial service in Los Angeles, singing tribute songs including We Are the World and Heal the World.

    Personal Life

In 1968, Rebbie married her childhood sweetheart Nathaniel Brown. The marriage initially caused tension within the Jackson family because Joe Jackson believed marriage might interfere with her career.

The couple had three children together: Stacee Brown, Yashi Brown, and Austin Brown, the latter becoming a singer-songwriter and music producer.

Nathaniel Brown passed away in 2013 after battling cancer.
