    Woman shot and killed in robbery in Vihiga

    A 44-year-old woman was shot and killed in a robbery incident in Luanda, Vihiga County.

    Police said Beverline Afwande operated an Mpesa shop in the area and was waylaid and shot fatally as she rode on a motorcycle to her house on Friday February 13, 2026.

    The assailants grabbed a bag she had and contained unknown amount of money and fled the scene.

    This is the latest such violent robbery and murder in the area amid calls for action to address the menace.

    Police said the victim was headed home on a motorcycle when she was waylaid by three men on a motorcycle also and shot in the chest. She was rushed to the Coptic Mission Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

    Senior police officers visited the scene as part of the probe into the shooting as the body was moved to the mortuary.

    A spent cartridge was recovered at the scene and taken for ballistic tests, police said on Sunday amid hunt for the assailants.

    In Butere, Kakamega County, one Brian Onyango, 26 died in hospital after being assaulted by unknown people.

    Police said the assault happened on February 13 in the Sofia area and the motive was not immediately known.

    The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other procedures.

    Police said they were pursuing the said assailants.

    In Siaya town, police said they were hunting for a suspect who attacked a boda boda rider and robbed him of his motorcycle in an attack. The rider sustained serious injuries in the head and was rushed to the hospital in a stable condition.

    Police said such incidents have been on the rise in the region amid investigations into the trend.

    Police usually advise victims to cooperate with their attackers for their safety.

    Most of the stolen motorcycles are refurbished and sold to unsuspecting buyers elsewhere, police investigations show.
