    Siblings

Axel has at least two sisters, Whitney Witsel and Shirelle Witsel.

Whitney has been publicly visible supporting her brother at major tournaments, including the 2018 FIFA World Cup, where she appeared alongside their father Thierry in the stands during Belgium’s matches.

Shirelle, referred to as his little sister in earlier family photos, was part of the household during his early years at Standard Liège.

Family, including his siblings, provided encouragement and a competitive environment that helped foster his passion and work ethic for the sport from a young age.

    Career

Witsel began his professional journey at his hometown club, Standard Liège, making his debut in 2006 at the age of 17.

He quickly became a key player, contributing to league titles and domestic success while forming part of a talented young midfield.

His time at Standard included a notable but controversial incident in 2009 involving a tackle on an opponent, which led to a suspension but highlighted his intense playing style.

In 2011, he moved to Benfica in Portugal, where he won the Taça da Liga and impressed in European competitions.

A high-profile €40 million transfer to Zenit Saint Petersburg followed in 2012.

During his years in Russia, Witsel won the Russian Premier League title and other domestic honours, establishing himself as a reliable central figure.

A stint at Tianjin Quanjian in China came next, before he returned to Europe with Borussia Dortmund in 2018.

At Dortmund, he added the DFB-Pokal and DFL-Supercup to his collection.

Later, Witsel joined Atlético Madrid in 2022, where he transitioned effectively into a centre-back role under Diego Simeone, providing stability to the defence.

In 2025, he signed with La Liga club Girona, continuing his career at a high level into his mid-30s.

Internationally, he has represented Belgium at multiple World Cups (2014, 2018, 2022) and European Championships, playing a key part in the team’s third-place finish at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

    Accolades

At club level, Witsel secured multiple Belgian Pro League titles, the Belgian Cup, and Super Cups with Standard Liège.

He added the Portuguese League Cup with Benfica, the Russian Premier League, Russian Cup, and Super Cups with Zenit, as well as the German DFB-Pokal and DFL-Supercup with Borussia Dortmund.

Individually, he was awarded the Belgian Golden Shoe in 2008 as the country’s top footballer.

On the international stage, his contributions helped Belgium achieve consistent success, including a bronze medal at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
