How Craig McCaw Made His Fortune

After graduating from Stanford University, McCaw returned to Washington to help manage his family’s communications business.

During the early 1980s, he identified cellular technology as the future of telecommunications. Rather than focusing on traditional cable television, he aggressively acquired cellular licenses issued by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and purchased struggling regional cellular operators.

His strategy allowed McCaw Cellular to grow into the largest cellular phone company in the United States.

In 1994, he sold the company to AT&T in a landmark deal worth $12.6 billion, instantly making him one of America’s wealthiest entrepreneurs.

    Clearwire Corporation

After selling McCaw Cellular, he remained active in the telecommunications sector.

In 2003, McCaw founded Clearwire Corporation, a company focused on providing wireless broadband internet services using WiMAX technology.

Although Clearwire experienced rapid growth, it faced stiff competition in the evolving broadband market. The company was eventually acquired by Sprint Nextel in 2013.

    Early Life

Craig McCaw was born on August 11, 1949, in Centralia, Washington.

He grew up in a family involved in the broadcasting business. His father, Bill McCaw, owned several radio and television stations across the Pacific Northwest.

As a child, McCaw struggled with dyslexia but overcame learning challenges through determination and hard work.

He later attended Stanford University, graduating in 1973 with a degree in history.

    Philanthropy

McCaw has supported numerous charitable causes throughout his career.

One of his best-known initiatives was the Free Willy Foundation, created after the success of the 1993 film Free Willy.

The foundation worked to return Keiko, the whale featured in the movie, to the wild while raising awareness about marine conservation and animal welfare.

    Personal Life

Craig McCaw was married to Wendy McCaw for more than two decades before the couple divorced in the late 1990s.

He later married Susan Rasinski, an athlete and philanthropist who shares his interest in environmental conservation.

    Divorce Settlement

McCaw’s divorce from Wendy McCaw became one of the most expensive divorce settlements of its time.

The settlement, finalized in 1998, reportedly exceeded $460 million and included cash, real estate, and other valuable assets.

    Luxury Car Collection

Craig McCaw is known for his passion for rare automobiles.

Together with his brother Bruce, he reportedly owned one of the world’s largest private collections of classic and luxury cars.

Among the highlights of his collection is a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, which he reportedly purchased for $38.1 million in 2014. The Ferrari 250 GTO is considered one of the most valuable collector cars ever produced, with only a few dozen examples remaining worldwide.

    Real Estate Portfolio

McCaw has owned several high-profile luxury properties over the years.

    James Island

One of his best-known properties is James Island, a private island off the coast of British Columbia that he purchased in 1994.

The island spans approximately 780 acres and features:

    • An 18-hole golf course.
    • A large waterfront mansion.
    • Multiple guest cottages.
    • A private airstrip.
    • Recreational facilities.

    Washington Estate

McCaw also owns a luxury estate in Hunts Point, Washington, a property previously associated with musician Kenny G.

The waterfront estate has been listed for sale multiple times with asking prices reaching tens of millions of dollars.

    California Property

He has also owned luxury homes in California, including a waterfront mansion in Tiburon, overlooking San Francisco Bay.
