Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have intercepted a trailer transporting cannabis worth approximately Sh24.7 million in Voi, Taita Taveta County, and arrested two suspects.
In a statement, the DCI said detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) in Mombasa and Voi, working jointly with officers from Voi Police Station, acted on intelligence to intercept a Scania truck towing a trailer within Voi Township.
What initially appeared to be a routine cargo inspection turned into a major anti-drug operation after officers searched the vehicle.
The search led to the recovery of 11 gunny bags containing cannabis weighing a total of 825 kilograms, with an estimated street value of Sh24.7 million.
The truck driver, Fredrick Otieno Ogode, and his alleged accomplice, Edwin Ochieng Otieno, were arrested at the scene.
According to the DCI, the two suspects were taken into police custody alongside the truck and the recovered narcotics, where they are undergoing processing pending their arraignment in court.
