Eva Lys is a German professional tennis player born on January 12, 2002, in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Her family relocated to Germany when she was about two years old, settling in the Hamburg area, and she has since represented Germany throughout her career.

Lys is coached primarily by her father, Vladimir Lys, a former professional who competed for Ukraine in the Davis Cup and now works as a coach in Hamburg.

Her mother, Maria Lys, is a lawyer.

Lys began playing tennis around the age of five, often spending time on the courts with her father while her mother pursued further studies in Germany after the family’s move.

    Siblings

Eva has two sisters. Her older sister is Lisa Matviyenko, born on October 6, 1997.

Lisa also pursued professional tennis, competing primarily on the ITF circuit where she reached a career-high ranking of around 420 and appearing in a WTA Tour main-draw doubles event at the 2021 Hamburg European Open.

She retired from the professional tour around 2021 to focus on law studies, following in their mother’s footsteps.

Lisa served as an important influence and training partner for Eva during her early years, offering practical advice on the realities of the tour, including the importance of learning to handle losses.

    Career

Lys made her professional debut on the ITF Circuit in 2016 and gradually built experience through lower-level events.

She claimed her first ITF singles title in 2020 at a W25 event in Altenkirchen, Germany, and has since secured a total of three ITF singles titles.

She earned a wildcard into the doubles main draw at the 2021 Hamburg European Open for her WTA Tour debut and began appearing more regularly in qualifying and main draws thereafter.

Early highlights included winning the German national championships in 2021.

Lys has represented Germany in the Billie Jean King Cup.

Her breakthrough season came in 2025, when she entered the Australian Open main draw as a lucky loser and advanced to the fourth round—the first such run to the last 16 by a lucky loser in the women’s singles Open Era at a major in notable accounts of the achievement.

Later that year she reached her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal in Beijing, recording a career-first Top 10 victory over then-No. 10 Elena Rybakina along the way.

She finished 2025 ranked inside the Top 40 and has at times held the position of Germany’s highest-ranked women’s singles player.

Her game is characterized by taking the ball early, playing to her own rhythm, and a strong fighting spirit, with a preference for faster surfaces.

    Accolades

Lys reached a career-high WTA singles ranking of world No. 39 on January 5, 2026.

She has won three ITF singles titles and the German national singles championship in 2021.

Her best Grand Slam result is the fourth round of the 2025 Australian Open, achieved as a lucky loser.

In 2025 she also recorded her first Top 10 win and advanced to a WTA 1000 quarterfinal in Beijing.

Career prize money has surpassed two million US dollars.
