Four Charged Over Fake TSC Recruitment Scam That Cost Job Seekers Sh40 Million

Four people have been arrested in Bomet County over a large-scale fraud scheme involving fake Teachers Service Commission (TSC) recruitment letters that cost job seekers more than Sh40 million.

Detectives attached to the TSC, working with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), arrested the suspects after lengthy investigations.

Those arrested are David Kemei, a TSC director in Konoin Sub-County; Rosebella Chepkemoi Korir, a former Bomet County Woman Representative aspirant; and two teachers, Leonard Siele Towett and Mercy Cherotich.

According to the DCI, the suspects targeted unemployed teachers and members of the public, demanding large sums of money in exchange for forged appointment letters. The letters falsely promised permanent and pensionable jobs with the TSC.

“Many victims reportedly took loans, sold property, or exhausted their savings in pursuit of the promised jobs,” the statement read.

The four suspects were arraigned before the Bomet Law Courts on Friday, where detectives obtained 14-day custodial orders to allow for further investigations.

Authorities believe the fraud network operates beyond Bomet County and may involve suspects in Kericho, Narok, Kisii and Nyamira counties. Investigations are ongoing to track down more people linked to the scheme.

The DCI and the TSC said they are committed to dismantling criminal networks that exploit job seekers and undermine public trust in government institutions.
