Fresh headache for Jhanda as Ruto ally joins Nyaribari Chache race

The political contest for Nyaribari Chache parliamentary seat has taken a new twist after Communications Authority board official Okeng’o Nyambane declared his bid, setting up a potentially bruising battle with incumbent MP Zaheer Jhanda.

Nyambane’s entry adds to a growing field of aspirants seeking to unseat Jhanda, who is expected to defend his seat on a ticket allied to William Ruto’s camp ahead of the next General Election.

Also in the race is Dr. Joseph Birundu, a close associate of Fred Matiang’i, who is widely seen as re-emerging in national politics with a potential presidential bid.

Nyambane has already begun consolidating grassroots support, securing endorsements from elders drawn from the Batondo and Mobea clans. In parallel, Birundu has also rallied backing from a separate group of elders during a meeting at his Keumbu home earlier this week.

Speaking on Wednesday, Nyambane framed his candidacy as a response to what he termed as leadership gaps in the constituency.

“Our people are hungry for leadership that makes sense—leadership that responds when children need bursaries and essential services,” he said.

He cited “missed opportunities” in Nyaribari Chache, pledging to prioritize infrastructure development, education, and job creation.

“I am stepping forward because our people deserve better services, transparent leadership, and inclusive growth,” Nyambane added. “The constituency has immense potential, but we must unlock it through deliberate, people-centered policies.”

While he is yet to declare his political party, insiders indicate he is leaning towards aligning with pro-government forces.

On his part, Birundu has already pitched tent with the Jubilee Party, setting the stage for a multi-cornered contest that could reshape local political dynamics.

Nyambane outlined a development-focused agenda, promising to improve road networks, expand access to essential services, and strengthen engagement with local communities.

“My priority is to ensure every resident feels the impact of development,” he said, adding that transparency and accountability would underpin his leadership approach.

The developments pose a fresh political test for Jhanda, a vocal supporter of President Ruto who has built his profile through high-visibility community engagements and political mobilization.

However, the legislator has recently faced criticism from sections of constituents accusing him of promoting tokenism, particularly through food donations, instead of pursuing long-term development solutions.

With multiple candidates now mobilizing support and aligning with different political camps, the Nyaribari Chache race is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched contests in the region.
