The government, through the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, in collaboration with the World Bank Group, has announced internship opportunities for young professionals under the Horn of Africa Groundwater for Resilience Project (HoAGW4RP).

The programme aims to empower recent graduates by equipping them with practical skills and field experience in Kenya’s water sector.

In a public notice issued on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the Ministry stated that the internship is open to candidates who hold a bachelor’s degree in relevant fields and who graduated no more than two years ago.

The 12-month programme is designed to help bridge the gap between academic knowledge and on-the-job experience.

“The Internship program is targeting the young professionals, particularly the young graduates with a bachelor’s degree certificate and having obtained the said qualification not more than two years before the date of this advertisement,” read part of the notice.

The initiative, funded by the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA), focuses on enhancing groundwater access and sustainable water management in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid counties, including Turkana, Wajir, Garissa, Marsabit, and Mandera.

According to the ministry, the internship will admit 45 candidates in its first cohort. The selected graduates will be deployed to field stations and project implementation units in counties where the project is underway. Participants will be expected to undertake assigned tasks, participate in mentorship and reporting activities, and adhere to project regulations. They will also be required to document their experiences, comply with quarterly evaluations, and uphold confidentiality and responsibility in handling tools and equipment.

To be eligible, applicants must be Kenyan citizens aged between 18 and 35 years. They must possess a recognized bachelor’s degree in fields such as geology, hydrogeology, environmental science, GIS, hydrology, water resources management, civil engineering, data science, climate change, or policy analysis. They must also demonstrate discipline, strong communication skills, and a willingness to be posted to any project location.

Successful interns will receive a monthly stipend and field allowances according to government guidelines. Upon completion, they will be awarded certificates recognizing their participation and will gain valuable experience in areas including groundwater management, policy development, and fieldwork operations.

Interested candidates are required to submit their applications via email to hoa@rcgw.go.ke by July 22, 2025. The subject line should read: APPLICATION FOR THE HoAGW4RP INTERNSHIP. All applicants must attach a cover letter, curriculum vitae (CV), copies of academic certificates, and a copy of their national ID.
