Learning how to convert an Excel file to Google Sheets is useful when you want to access, edit, and share spreadsheets online. Google Sheets allows multiple people to work on the same document, making it suitable for businesses, students, and teams. You can convert an Excel file into a Google Sheets document using Google Drive or the Google Sheets application without manually recreating your spreadsheet.

Upload Your Excel File to Google Drive

The first step is to upload your Excel spreadsheet to Google Drive.

    Follow these instructions:

    • Open your web browser and visit Google Drive.
    • Sign in using your Google account.
    • Click the New button on the left side.
    • Select File Upload.
    • Locate the Excel file on your computer.
    • Select the file and click Open.
    • Wait for the upload to finish.

Your Excel spreadsheet will now appear in Google Drive.

    1. Open the Excel File Using Google Sheets

After uploading your file, you can open it using Google Sheets.

    Here is how:

    • Locate the uploaded Excel file in Google Drive.
    • Right-click the file.
    • Select Open with.
    • Choose Google Sheets.
    • Wait for the spreadsheet to open.

Google Sheets will display your Excel workbook, allowing you to view and edit its contents.

    1. Convert the Excel File into a Google Sheets Document

Opening an Excel file in Google Sheets does not automatically change its file format. You need to save it as a Google Sheets document.

    Follow these steps:

    • Open the Excel file in Google Sheets.
    • Click File in the top menu.
    • Select Save as Google Sheets.
    • Wait for Google Sheets to create the new document.

The converted spreadsheet will appear as a separate Google Sheets file in your Google Drive.

    1. Convert Excel to Google Sheets Using the Import Feature

You can also convert an Excel file directly from the Google Sheets homepage.

    Follow these instructions:

    • Visit the Google Sheets website.
    • Open a blank spreadsheet.
    • Click File.
    • Select Import.
    • Choose the Upload tab.
    • Drag your Excel file into the upload area or click Browse.
    • Select how you want to import the spreadsheet.
    • Click Import data.

Google Sheets will import the Excel workbook into a spreadsheet that you can edit online.

    1. Check Your Converted Spreadsheet

After converting your Excel file, review the Google Sheets document to ensure that everything has transferred correctly.

    Pay attention to the following:

    • Check that all worksheets are available.
    • Confirm that formulas are working correctly.
    • Review tables, charts, and images.
    • Check cell formatting, colours, and borders.
    • Confirm that dates and numbers appear correctly.
    • Review any special Excel functions that may not be supported.

Some advanced Excel features, macros, and formatting may not work exactly the same way in Google Sheets.

    1. Share Your Google Sheets Document

One advantage of Google Sheets is that you can share your spreadsheet with other people.

    To share your converted document:

    • Open the Google Sheets file.
    • Click the Share button.
    • Enter the email address of the person you want to share it with.
    • Choose Viewer, Commenter, or Editor access.
    • Click Send.

You can also create a shareable link and adjust its access permissions.
