Muesli is a healthy and versatile breakfast option packed with fiber, vitamins, and natural sweetness. Unlike granola, it is not baked with added sweeteners or oils, making it a lighter and more nutritious choice. Making homemade muesli allows you to control the ingredients, ensuring it is free from unwanted additives and tailored to your taste. Here is how to make muesli.

    Ingredients

To make a basic muesli mix, you will need:

    • Rolled oats (2 cups) – A fiber-rich base that provides sustained energy
    • Nuts (½ cup) – Almonds, walnuts, or cashews add protein and crunch
    • Seeds (¼ cup) – Sunflower seeds, chia seeds, or flaxseeds for extra nutrition
    • Dried fruits (½ cup) – Raisins, apricots, cranberries, or dates for natural sweetness
    • Desiccated coconut (¼ cup, optional) – Adds a subtle sweetness and texture
    • Spices (½ teaspoon cinnamon or nutmeg, optional) – Enhances the flavor
    • Sweetener (optional) – Honey or maple syrup if you prefer a slightly sweet taste

    Instructions

    1. Prepare the Base

Start with rolled oats as the foundation of your muesli. Choose whole rolled oats instead of instant oats, as they retain more nutrients and have a better texture.

    1. Add Nuts and Seeds

Chop your choice of nuts into smaller pieces to make them easier to eat. Combine them with sunflower seeds, chia seeds, or flaxseeds to boost the nutritional value. These ingredients add healthy fats, protein, and crunch to your muesli.

    1. Incorporate Dried Fruits

Cut dried fruits like raisins, apricots, or dates into small pieces. These provide natural sweetness and essential vitamins. If you prefer a less sweet muesli, reduce the quantity of dried fruit.

    1. Mix in Additional Ingredients

Add desiccated coconut, cinnamon, or nutmeg to enhance the flavor. If you want a hint of sweetness, you can drizzle in a little honey or maple syrup. However, this step is optional since dried fruits already add natural sugars.

    1. Store Your Muesli

Once all the ingredients are well combined, transfer the mixture to an airtight container. Store it in a cool, dry place for up to one month.

    How to Serve Muesli

Muesli can be enjoyed in different ways:

    • With Milk or Yogurt – Pour cold or warm milk over a bowl of muesli, or mix it with yogurt for a creamy texture
    • Soaked Overnight – Combine muesli with milk or yogurt and let it sit overnight in the fridge for a softer, more digestible breakfast (similar to overnight oats)
    • As a Topping – Sprinkle muesli over smoothie bowls, fruit salads, or oatmeal for extra crunch

    Customization Tips

    • For a crunchier texture, lightly toast the oats and nuts in the oven at 180°C (350°F) for 10 minutes before mixing with other ingredients
    • For added protein, mix in hemp seeds or protein powder
    • For a gluten-free version, use certified gluten-free oats
