Microsoft Word sometimes inserts lines automatically when typing certain characters or when using formatting tools. These lines can appear as horizontal dividers, borders, or underlined text. Removing them depends on how they were created. Here is how to remove line in word.

    Removing Automatic Horizontal Lines

If you type three dashes (—), underscores (___), or equal signs (===) and press Enter, Word automatically converts them into a horizontal line. To remove it:

    1. Place your cursor above the line
    2. Press Backspace until the line disappears

    If that doesn’t work, try:

    • Clicking Undo (Ctrl + Z) immediately after Word creates the line
    • Highlighting the line and pressing Delete

    Disabling Automatic Line Creation

To stop Word from inserting lines automatically:

    1. Go to the File tab and select Options
    2. Click Proofing and then AutoCorrect Options
    3. Select the AutoFormat As You Type tab
    4. Uncheck Border lines under “Apply as you type”

This prevents Word from creating lines when typing dashes or other characters.

Removing Border Lines from a Paragraph

If a line appears below text and doesn’t disappear when pressing Backspace, it might be a paragraph border:

    1. Click anywhere in the paragraph above the line
    2. Go to the Home tab and click the Borders dropdown (in the Paragraph group)
    3. Select No Border

This removes the border while keeping your text intact.

    Deleting Table or Shape Lines

If the line is part of a table or shape:

    • Click on the line to select it
    • Press Delete or Backspace

For stubborn lines, right-click and check if it’s part of a table border or a shape that needs manual removal.
