    Ivan Vladimirovich Provorov is a Russian professional ice hockey player who plays as a defenseman for the Columbus Blue Jackets in the National Hockey League (NHL).

    Born on January 13, 1997, in Yaroslavl, Russia, he is known for his smooth skating, strong two-way play, durability, and ability to log heavy minutes on the blue line.

    Provorov moved to the United States at a young age to pursue his hockey dreams and has become a reliable, top-pair defenseman in the league.

    Ivan is the oldest of three children born to parents Vladimir and Venera Provorov.

    He has a younger sister named Alexandra and a much younger brother, Vladimir, who is approximately 11 years his junior.

    Vladimir has followed in his older brother’s footsteps, moving to the United States to develop his game as a forward and committing to play college hockey at Ohio State University.

    Career

    Provorov began his hockey journey in the youth system of Lokomotiv Yaroslavl in his hometown.

    At age 13, he moved to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, to play for the junior Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights, demonstrating his commitment to reaching the highest levels of the game.

    He later joined the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League (WHL), where he excelled and was selected seventh overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

    He made his NHL debut with the Flyers in the 2016-17 season and quickly established himself as a workhorse defenseman, rarely missing games and taking on significant ice time.

    Provorov spent seven seasons with Philadelphia, serving as an alternate captain and developing into one of the team’s most important players.

    In June 2023, he was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets, where he has continued his career as a top defenseman known for his consistency and leadership qualities.

    Accolades

    Provorov has earned several honors during his NHL career, most notably winning the Barry Ashbee Trophy as the Philadelphia Flyers’ best defenseman on four occasions, including as a rookie in 2016-17, making him the youngest recipient in franchise history.

    He has also been recognized for his strong junior career, winning the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy as the WHL’s top defenseman in 2015-16.

    Internationally, Provorov has represented Russia at various levels, including the IIHF World Junior Championship and senior World Championships.
