Kisii University has reaffirmed its commitment to producing globally minded medical professionals following the return of its medicine students from a 21-day academic and cultural expedition at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom.
The students returned home on Sunday after a three-week programme that exposed them to new approaches to medical education, healthcare delivery and professional practice in an international setting.
Kisii University Vice Chancellor Prof Nathan Ogechi said the students returned with more than academic knowledge, describing the expedition as an important step in preparing future healthcare leaders for an increasingly interconnected world.
“They went, they saw, they conquered,” Prof Ogechi said while celebrating the students’ successful return from the programme.
He said the students had established new professional connections, gained fresh perspectives and acquired experiences that would broaden their understanding of medicine from a global perspective.
According to Prof Ogechi, the exposure demonstrated that medical education should not be confined by geographical boundaries.
“This journey reminded us that learning knows no borders, and medicine is a language that connects us all,” he said.
The Vice Chancellor said Kisii University’s ambition goes beyond training doctors to meet the immediate needs of the local healthcare system.
He said the institution was deliberately preparing students to work confidently in diverse healthcare environments and contribute to addressing medical challenges both locally and internationally.
“At Kisii University, we are not only preparing doctors for today, we are nurturing globally minded healthcare leaders for tomorrow,” he said.
The Manchester expedition is part of the university’s efforts to expand learning opportunities through international exposure, academic partnerships and exchange programmes.
The university said such initiatives allow students to interact with different healthcare systems and professional cultures while gaining a deeper understanding of emerging trends in medicine.
The return of the students has also reinforced the institution’s emphasis on inclusivity and borderless learning, with the university positioning itself as an institution whose academic opportunities extend beyond Kenya’s borders.
“We are Kisii University. We are borderless,” Prof Ogechi said.
The university expects the knowledge, professional networks and experiences gained in Manchester to broaden the students’ outlook as they continue their medical training and eventually translate into improved healthcare practice in Kenya.
