A 64-year-old man was killed after a quarry he was working in collapsed in Giatumbi village, Kinyaga, Kirinyaga County.

Another man was injured in the Thursday incident and rushed to the hospital, police said.

The two had ventured into a quarry when sand debris collapsed and trapped them. Police said Phillip Njagaru Kariuki, 64, died while his colleague was rescued alive and taken to the hospital.

A crowd gathered at the scene as rescue teams rushed to help the victims. The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other procedures.

In Maua, Igembe, Meru County, a man was shot and wounded in an attempted robbery incident by gunmen.

The victim had arrived home in his car together with his wife who alighted to open the gate. It was then that gunmen emerged from a nearby thicket and shot the victim in the right thigh and right hand finger.

The gang of about six men escaped without stealing anything from the victims. Police visited the scene and realized the victim had been rushed to the hospital where he was admitted in a stable condition. Efforts to arrest the gang were ongoing on Friday, police said.

In Macalder area, Migori County, police said they were investigating an incident where a mob raided a gold mining site and destroyed property. The gang had also used an illegal underground tunnel to steal gold from the site.

The group staged a protest on Thursday and destroyed four cars, security cameras, structures, electronic goods and a fence.

Anti-riot police were called to disperse the group pending the probe.

Armed police were posted at the site to deter further raids which have been linked to business rivalry.

In Ngando area, Nairobi, a suspect was lynched by a mob in a failed robbery of a mobile phone. Police said the suspect was accused of stealing a mobile phone from a pedestrian. His accomplice managed to escape.

Such incidents of mobile phone snatching and robbery have been on the rise amid efforts to contain them.

Police discourage mob lynching and want suspects to be surrendered to authorities for action.

Most victims are usually on mobile using motorcycles.
