A mason was electrocuted as he worked at a construction site in Kioi area, Kayole, Nairobi County.

Police said Benedict Owoko, 30, was among the masons at the site when the incident happened on January 8 afternoon. A second mason was seriously burnt and rushed to the hospital, police said.

The deceased was pulling metal square tubes from the second to the third floor when they accidentally touched live naked wires.

This caused an electrocution on Owoko. His colleague rushed to his rescue and was left with serious burns, police and witnesses said.

The body of the mason was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other procedures.

Such incidents are common at construction sites amid calls for more measures to protect the workers.

In Macalder area, Migori County, a 50-year-old man was killed after a gold mining shaft collapsed on him.

Police said Zephania Ndege had ventured into the shaft on January 8 when a stone collapsed and trapped him.

Other miners at the scene rushed to his rescue in vain. They retrieved the body which police had physical injuries in the head and stomach before it was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other procedures.

Such incidents have been on the rise in the past months with calls for safety measures to be put in place by the site owners to ensure the miners are safe.

Elsewhere in Garsen, Tana River County, a seven-year-old girl died after being trapped by a petrol pump at a petrol station.

Witnesses said the girl and her colleagues had left school and stopped at the facility which is under construction before they started to play.

It was then an unknown man pushed one of the pumps that were there and unattended. The pump fell and trapped the girl fatally.

She was rushed to a local clinic where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police said they are pursuing the man said to have pushed the pump and that the body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.
