A parcel delivery truck transporting goods from Nairobi to Mandera was destroyed by fire on Saturday morning along the Isiolo–Mandera road in Wajir County.

This saw many lose valuables of unknown values.

The incident occurred Saturday at about 7:30am, involving a white Mitsubishi Fuso 10-wheeler operated by Tawakal Parcels Company.

According to police, the driver, noticed smoke billowing from the vehicle’s luggage compartment while driving.

He immediately stopped to investigate and discovered flames spreading through the cargo.

The driver and his conductor attempted to extinguish the fire but were unable to contain it before the blaze engulfed the entire vehicle.

The Wajir County Fire Department was alerted, while police officers responded to the scene to help contain the fire and manage the situation.

    No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established, and investigations are ongoing.

Meanwhile, a 22-year-old man was arrested in Mandera after a multi-agency security team reportedly found him in possession of a Kenyan national identity card that authorities suspect may have been obtained fraudulently.

The suspect, identified by police as Abdullahi Ali Gardale, was arrested on Saturday during an intelligence-led operation targeting public service vehicles travelling along the Mandera–Nairobi route.

According to police, officers conducted an impromptu search of Land Cruiser vehicles operating on the route before detaining the suspect after he allegedly failed to satisfactorily explain his identity and circumstances.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect is believed to be a Somali national from Baidoa. Officers also recovered a mobile phone containing details of a Somali passport bearing his name, raising further questions about his nationality.

Police said the suspect was booked at Mandera Police Station and is expected to undergo further interviews by a multi-agency security team to establish his true nationality, determine how he obtained the Kenyan identity card, and assess whether there are any links to terrorism or other security threats.

Investigations are ongoing. Such cases where Somalis possess fraudulently obtained documents have been on the rise amid investigations.
