    Pat Sajak was born Patrick Leonard Sajdak on October 26, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois.

    He attended Columbia College Chicago, where he began developing an interest in broadcasting.

    His first radio job came while he was still a college student after landing a news anchor position at local station WEDC.

    Broadcasting Career

    During the Vietnam War, Sajak served in the U.S. Army, working as a disc jockey for Armed Forces Radio.

    After military service, he worked at several radio stations before moving into television as a weather forecaster.

    His broadcasting career eventually took him to KNBC-TV in Los Angeles, where he became a full-time weatherman.

    That role opened the door to the opportunity that would define his career.

    Wheel of Fortune Success

    In 1981, legendary television producer Merv Griffin selected Sajak to replace Chuck Woolery as host of Wheel of Fortune.

    Despite initial resistance from network executives, Griffin insisted on the hiring, a decision that proved to be one of the most successful in television history.

    For more than four decades, Sajak became synonymous with the game show, hosting thousands of episodes alongside longtime co-host Vanna White.

    In 2019, Guinness World Records recognized him as the longest-serving host of a television game show.

    He officially retired from the program in 2024, with Ryan Seacrest succeeding him as host.
