    Early Life

    Queen Sofía was born Sophia Margarita Victoria Frederika on November 2, 1938, in Psychiko, Athens, Greece. She is the daughter of Paul of Greece and Frederica of Hanover.

    By birth, she belongs to the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, and through marriage she became part of the Spanish royal House of Bourbon.

    She studied at El Nasr Girls’ College in Egypt, attended Schloss Salem boarding school in Germany, and later pursued studies at University of Cambridge and Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge.

    In 1960, she represented Greece in sailing and won a gold medal with the Greek team at the Summer Olympics.

    Queen Sofía of Spain Marriage

    Sofía married Juan Carlos I in 1962. The couple has three children:

    • Infanta Elena
    • Infanta Cristina
    • Felipe VI, the current King of Spain

    They also have several grandchildren.

    Raised in the Greek Orthodox faith, Queen Sofía converted to Roman Catholicism upon her marriage.

    Queen of Spain (1975–2014)

    Following Spain’s transition to democracy, Sofía became Queen consort when her husband was proclaimed king on November 22, 1975. Her tenure lasted until June 19, 2014, when Juan Carlos I abdicated in favor of their son, King Felipe VI.

    Throughout her years as queen, she was known for dignity, diplomacy, and strong support for humanitarian causes.
