    Ryne Sandberg Salary

Ryne Sandberg earned an estimated $25 million in MLB salary throughout his playing career.

His biggest annual salary came in 1992 when he earned about $7 million. The deal made him the highest-paid player in Major League Baseball at the time.

Sandberg’s earnings reflected his importance to the Cubs. He had developed from a relatively unknown prospect into one of the best all-around players in baseball.

His income later expanded beyond playing baseball. Sandberg worked in broadcasting, served as a bank spokesman and eventually moved into coaching and managing.

These different sources of income contributed to his estimated $16 million fortune.

    Early Life

Ryne Dee Sandberg was born on September 18, 1959, in Spokane, Washington.

He was the son of Elizabeth, a nurse, and Sandy Sandberg, a mortician.

Sandberg attended North Central High School, where he played both baseball and football.

After graduating in 1978, he initially committed to Washington State University. His plans changed when he was selected in the 1978 MLB amateur draft.

Rather than attending college, Sandberg chose to pursue a professional baseball career.

    Minor League Career

The Philadelphia Phillies selected Sandberg in the 1978 MLB Draft.

He began his professional career in the minor leagues with the Helena Phillies of the Pioneer League.

During his first professional season, he batted .311 with one home run and 23 RBIs in 56 games.

He moved to the Class A Spartanburg Phillies in 1979 and later played for the Class AA Reading Phillies in 1980.

At Reading, Sandberg hit .310 with 11 home runs and 79 RBIs.

In 1981, he played for the Class AAA Oklahoma City 89ers. He batted .293 with nine home runs and 62 RBIs in 133 games before receiving a call-up to the major leagues.

Sandberg appeared in 13 games for Philadelphia that season and hit .167.

His time with the Phillies, however, would soon come to an end.

Ryne Sandberg Joins the Chicago Cubs

Before the 1982 season, Sandberg was traded to the Chicago Cubs.

The trade eventually became regarded as one of the most important deals in Cubs history because Sandberg developed into a franchise star.

He began establishing himself as an elite defensive second baseman in Chicago.

In 1983, he won the first of what would become nine consecutive Gold Glove Awards.

His breakout season came in 1984.

    Ryne Sandberg’s 1984 MVP Season

Sandberg became a household name during the 1984 season.

He batted .314 with 19 home runs and 84 RBIs and earned his first Silver Slugger Award.

He also made the first of 10 consecutive All-Star teams.

Most importantly, Sandberg was named National League MVP as the Cubs won the NL East title.

One of the defining moments of that season came during a game against the St. Louis Cardinals that became known as “The Sandberg Game.”

Sandberg delivered two game-tying home runs during the contest before the Cubs eventually won in the 11th inning.

The performance helped establish him as one of the most exciting players in baseball.

    Chicago Cubs Career

Sandberg continued to produce at a high level throughout the 1980s and early 1990s.

In 1985, he batted .305 with 26 home runs and 83 RBIs. He also recorded a career-high 54 stolen bases.

In 1990, Sandberg reached another milestone when he led the National League with 40 home runs.

He also batted .306 and drove in 100 runs that season.

His defensive performance was equally impressive. Sandberg played 123 consecutive games at second base without committing an error, an MLB record at the time.

In 1991, he again drove in 100 runs and won his ninth consecutive Gold Glove Award.

Sandberg won his seventh and final Silver Slugger Award in 1992 after batting .304 with 26 home runs and 87 RBIs.

    Ryne Sandberg’s Retirement and Comeback

Sandberg experienced a difficult 1994 season.

After playing just 57 games, he decided to retire from baseball.

However, his retirement did not last permanently.

Sandberg returned to the Chicago Cubs for the 1996 season and played again in 1997.

After the 1997 season, he retired for good.

He finished his MLB career with a .285 batting average, 282 home runs and a .989 fielding percentage.

At the time, his .989 fielding percentage was a record for an MLB second baseman.

    Hall of Fame Career

Sandberg’s achievements earned him a place among baseball’s greatest second basemen.

He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005, several years after ending his playing career.

His career included seven Silver Slugger Awards, nine consecutive Gold Glove Awards, 10 consecutive All-Star selections and the 1984 National League MVP Award.

His combination of offensive production and defensive excellence made him one of the most complete second basemen of his era.

    Broadcasting Career

After initially staying away from the spotlight following his retirement, Sandberg returned to baseball through broadcasting.

In 2004, he became an analyst for ESPN Radio 1000.

A year later, he became a spokesperson for National City Bank.

His broadcasting work provided another source of income while keeping him connected to the sport.

However, Sandberg eventually returned to baseball in a more direct role.

    Coaching and Managing Career

In 2006, Sandberg began his managerial career with the Chicago Cubs’ Class A affiliate, the Peoria Chiefs.

He guided the team to the Midwest League championship game during his first season.

Sandberg continued moving through the Cubs’ minor league system.

He was promoted to the Tennessee Smokies in 2008 and then to the Iowa Cubs in 2009.

In late 2010, Sandberg left the Cubs organization to manage the Philadelphia Phillies’ Triple-A affiliate, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

He led the team to its first playoff appearance.

After the 2012 season, Sandberg joined the Phillies’ major league coaching staff as a third-base coach and infield instructor.

He was later named interim manager before receiving the permanent position following the 2013 season.

    Ryne Sandberg as Phillies Manager

Sandberg managed the Philadelphia Phillies during a difficult period for the franchise.

The team struggled during his tenure, and he resigned as manager during the 2015 season.

The Phillies had one of the worst records in MLB at the time.

Despite his challenges as a major league manager, Sandberg remained respected for his achievements as a player and his long connection to the Cubs and Phillies organizations.

In 2016, he returned to the Cubs organization as a goodwill ambassador.

    Personal Life

    Sandberg was married twice.

His first wife was Cindy, his high school sweetheart. The couple had two children, Justin and Lindsey, before divorcing in 1995.

    Sandberg later married Margaret.

Together, they became involved in charitable work and co-founded Ryno Kid Care, a foundation that supported children dealing with serious illnesses.

Sandberg’s charitable activities became an important part of his life away from baseball.

Ryne Sandberg’s Battle With Cancer and Death

Sandberg was diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer in January 2024.

He publicly shared his diagnosis and underwent treatment.

After battling the disease for more than a year, Sandberg died on July 28, 2025, at the age of 65.

His death marked the end of the life of one of the most respected players in Chicago Cubs history.

    Real Estate

Real estate was another part of Sandberg’s financial portfolio.

In 2004, Sandberg and his wife purchased a home in Phoenix for approximately $2.8 million.

The property was later sold in May 2017 for approximately $1.925 million.

The couple also owned a four-acre property near Lake Michigan in Lake Bluff, Illinois.

They purchased the property in 2016 for approximately $1.1 million.

The real estate investments formed part of Sandberg’s broader financial portfolio outside baseball.
