    Early Life

Bea Arthur was born Bernice Frankel on May 13, 1922, in Brooklyn, New York. She was raised in a Jewish family and later moved with her parents to Cambridge, Maryland. From a young age, Arthur faced health challenges but remained determined to pursue education and performance.

During World War II, she was among the first women to serve in the United States Marine Corps Women’s Reserve. After completing her service, she returned to New York and began studying acting, eventually setting the foundation for her career in theater and television.

    Stage Career

Arthur began her professional career in Off-Broadway theater before transitioning to Broadway, where she quickly earned recognition for her commanding stage presence. Her breakthrough came in the musical Mame, where she played Vera Charles, the witty and alcoholic best friend of the title character.

Her performance earned her a Tony Award and established her as a major force in American theater.

    Television Career

Arthur’s television career took off in the 1970s when she appeared on All in the Family as Edith Bunker’s outspoken cousin Maude. Her performance was so well received that it led to her own spin-off series, Maude.

In Maude, Arthur portrayed a politically active, independent woman who tackled controversial topics such as abortion, feminism, mental health, and social justice. The series became a landmark in television history and cemented Arthur’s reputation as a fearless and intelligent comedic actress.

“The Golden Girls” and Iconic Status

In 1985, Arthur took on her most iconic role as Dorothy Zbornak in The Golden Girls. The show centered on four older women living together in Miami and became one of the most successful sitcoms in television history.

Arthur’s performance as Dorothy—witty, sarcastic, and emotionally grounded—was widely praised and helped define the tone of the series. The show addressed aging, relationships, and social issues with humor and heart, and remains a cultural touchstone decades later.

Arthur earned multiple Emmy nominations for her performance and is considered one of the greatest television actresses of her era.

    Later Career

After The Golden Girls, Arthur continued to appear in television projects and occasional stage work. She remained selective with roles but maintained a strong presence in entertainment through guest appearances and voice work.

Beyond acting, Arthur was a committed activist. She supported LGBTQ rights, women’s rights, and animal welfare causes throughout her life. She was especially known for her generosity toward LGBTQ organizations and left a significant donation to the Ali Forney Center, which supports homeless LGBTQ youth.

    Personal Life

Arthur was married twice. Her second marriage was to director Gene Saks, with whom she adopted two sons. The couple later divorced.

Though she never had biological children, Arthur maintained close relationships with her family and colleagues throughout her life.

She died in April 2009 at the age of 86 after a battle with cancer.

    Real Estate

In the 1970s, Arthur purchased a large estate in Brentwood, Los Angeles. The property, set on several acres, was extensively renovated in the 2000s. After her death, the home was sold in 2015 for approximately $15 million, reflecting her long-standing success and financial stability.
