The Ministry of Health has pledged to ensure that all inmates in the country are registered under the Social Health Authority (SHA) to enable them to access medical services when needed.

Dr. Ouma Oluga, Principal Secretary for the State Department for Medical Services, said the move will ensure prisoners receive timely and affordable healthcare, especially when they fall sick.

He noted that access to quality healthcare is a key pillar of the government’s bottom-up economic model.

Speaking at Lang’ata Women’s Prison during the launch of SHA registration and issuance of health ID cards, Dr. Oluga urged inmates to register without delay.

“If you have not registered, you are denying yourself the chance to access health services at any facility across the country,” he said.

Other officials present at the event included Dr. Salome Muhia, Principal Secretary for the State Department for Correctional Services; Dr. Belio Kipsang, Principal Secretary for Immigration and Citizen Services; and Ms. Aurelia Rono, Principal Secretary for Parliamentary Affairs, among other senior government officers.
