Cary Grant had an estimated net worth of $60 million at the time of his death in 1986. Adjusted for inflation, that amount would be approximately $130 million today. The English-born actor built his fortune through one of the most successful Hollywood careers of the 20th century, becoming known for his charm, sophistication and performances in romantic comedies, dramas and thrillers.

Grant was one of the most celebrated leading men of Hollywood’s Golden Age. The American Film Institute ranked him second on its list of the greatest male stars of all time, behind Humphrey Bogart.

His most famous films included The Awful Truth, Bringing Up Baby, Gunga Din, The Philadelphia Story, His Girl Friday, Suspicion, Arsenic and Old Lace, Notorious, The Bishop’s Wife, To Catch a Thief, An Affair to Remember, North by Northwest and Charade.

Grant also became one of Hollywood’s earliest technically independent actors. After choosing not to renew his studio contract, he gained greater control over the films he made and eventually established his own production company.

    Early Life

Cary Grant was born Archibald Alec Leach on January 4, 1904, in Bristol, England.

His father, Elias James Leach, worked as a tailor’s presser at a clothing factory, while his mother, Elsie Maria Leach, worked as a seamstress.

Grant’s childhood was difficult. His father struggled with alcoholism, while his mother suffered from depression. When Grant was nine years old, his father placed his mother in a mental institution but told his son that she had gone away on a long holiday.

Grant later believed that his mother had died.

His father eventually remarried and started another family. Grant did not discover that his mother was still alive until he was 31. His father eventually admitted the truth on his deathbed.

After learning where his mother was, Grant arranged for her to leave the institution.

Despite his difficult home life, Grant showed an early interest in entertainment. He enjoyed going to the theater with his father and eventually trained as a stilt walker.

He joined the Bob Pender Stage Troupe, a group of acrobatic performers, and began touring.

Grant had won a scholarship to attend Fairfield Grammar School in Bristol but was expelled at 14. His expulsion allowed him to pursue entertainment with the Pender Troupe.

His father signed a three-year contract with the troupe. Grant trained with the group until he was 18 while receiving a weekly salary, room and board.

    Move to America

Grant toured England with the Pender Troupe before traveling to the United States at the age of 16.

He eventually decided to remain in America and became part of the vaudeville circuit.

His work gradually expanded from stage performances to theater roles. He gained wider attention after landing the romantic lead in the musical Nikki. The production received a positive review from The New York Daily News.

The role helped Grant secure early film opportunities and eventually led to a contract with Paramount Pictures.

He began building the screen persona that would define his career. Grant became known for his polished appearance, confidence, humor and charm.

    Early Film Career

Grant made his feature-film debut in This Is the Night in 1932.

That same year, he appeared as a wealthy playboy in Blonde Venus. He continued playing similar characters in films including Merrily We Go to Hell, Hot Saturday and Madame Butterfly.

One of his early successes came with the 1933 film She Done Him Wrong, which starred Mae West.

During the early part of his career, Grant appeared in crime films and dramas before establishing himself as one of Hollywood’s leading romantic-comedy actors.

His career changed significantly with films such as Bringing Up Baby and The Philadelphia Story.

Cary Grant’s Rise to Hollywood Stardom

Grant’s appeal came from a combination of comic timing, elegance and screen presence.

He became particularly successful in romantic comedies, where he could combine sophisticated dialogue with physical comedy and charm.

The Awful Truth, Bringing Up Baby, His Girl Friday and The Philadelphia Story helped establish him as one of the leading actors of his generation.

He also demonstrated that he could handle serious roles.

His performances in films such as Penny Serenade, Suspicion and None But the Lonely Heart showed a more dramatic side of his acting.

    Cary Grant and Alfred Hitchcock

One of the most important relationships of Grant’s career was his collaboration with director Alfred Hitchcock.

Hitchcock cast Grant in four films: Suspicion, Notorious, To Catch a Thief and North by Northwest.

The films became some of the most respected productions of both men’s careers.

In Suspicion, Grant played a charming man whose wife begins to suspect that he may be dangerous.

In Notorious, he starred opposite Ingrid Bergman in a romantic spy thriller.

To Catch a Thief paired Grant with Grace Kelly against the backdrop of the French Riviera.

The collaboration reached another peak with North by Northwest in 1959.

Grant played advertising executive Roger Thornhill, a man mistaken for a government agent and pursued across the United States.

The film became one of Hitchcock’s most celebrated works. Its famous crop-duster sequence and Mount Rushmore climax remain among the most recognizable scenes in American cinema.

    Independent Career

Grant’s financial success was closely connected to the control he eventually gained over his career.

In the 1950s, he established his own production company and moved away from the traditional Hollywood studio system.

Grant was one of the first major actors to become technically independent by refusing to renew his studio contract. This gave him greater control over the projects he accepted and allowed him to have a larger say in his career.

His production company was associated with films including Operation Petticoat, Indiscreet, That Touch of Mink, Father Goose, Charade and Walk, Don’t Run.

This independence was important to Grant’s financial success because it allowed him to participate in films without being entirely controlled by a traditional studio contract.

    Awards and Recognition

Grant received two Academy Award nominations during his career. He was also nominated for five Golden Globes.

Although he never won a competitive Academy Award, the Academy eventually recognized his contribution to motion pictures with an Honorary Oscar.

Frank Sinatra presented Grant with the Honorary Academy Award in 1970.

The recognition reflected Grant’s status as one of the most influential stars of classic Hollywood.

His legacy continued long after his death, with the American Film Institute ranking him second among the greatest male stars of American cinema.

    Later Career

Grant continued appearing in major films throughout the 1950s and 1960s.

Some of his later successes included Indiscreet, That Touch of Mink, Charade and Father Goose.

He received Golden Globe recognition for several of these performances.

Grant made his final film appearances during the 1960s. He eventually decided to retire from acting at the age of 62.

His decision was influenced largely by his desire to spend more time raising his daughter.

After leaving the screen, Grant remained connected to the public through a one-man show called A Conversation with Cary Grant. The production involved Grant appearing before audiences and discussing his life and career.

    Personal Life

Grant was married five times during his life.

His first marriage was to actress Virginia Cherrill in 1934. The marriage ended in divorce the following year.

In 1942, Grant married heiress Barbara Hutton. Hutton was one of the wealthiest women in the world at the time. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1945, although they remained friends.

Grant married actress Betsy Drake in December 1949. The couple remained together until their divorce in 1962.

In 1965, Grant married actress Dyan Cannon. They had one child, a daughter named Jennifer Grant, in 1966.

Grant and Cannon separated in 1967 and divorced the following year.

In 1981, Grant married Barbara Harris, who was significantly younger than him. They remained married until his death.

Grant was also linked romantically to several other people during his lifetime.

There has been longstanding speculation about his relationship with actor Randolph Scott. However, Grant’s daughter has denied claims that her father was gay.

    Cary Grant’s Daughter

Grant had one child, Jennifer Grant, with Dyan Cannon.

He became increasingly focused on fatherhood later in his career. His decision to retire from acting at 62 was largely motivated by his desire to spend more time raising Jennifer.

His relationship with his daughter became an important part of his life during his later years.

After retiring from films, Grant devoted more time to his family while making occasional public appearances through his stage presentation.

    Real Estate

Grant was one of Hollywood’s wealthiest stars during his lifetime.

His earnings came from decades of film work, major studio contracts, independent productions and his involvement in his own production company.

He also owned properties in some of Southern California’s most desirable communities, including Beverly Hills, Malibu and Palm Springs.

His financial independence allowed him to maintain control over his career while also building significant personal wealth.

By the time of his death, Grant had accumulated an estimated fortune of $60 million.

    Death

In November 1986, Grant was preparing for a performance of A Conversation with Cary Grant at the Adler Theater in Davenport, Iowa.

He became ill while preparing for the appearance and was taken back to his hotel.

A doctor determined that Grant was suffering from a massive cerebral hemorrhage.

He died later that day on November 29, 1986. He was 82 years old.

Grant had requested that there be no funeral. His ashes were scattered in the Pacific Ocean.
