    Early Life

Dyan Cannon was born Samille Diane Friesen on January 4, 1937, in Tacoma, Washington. Her father, Ben, worked as a life insurance salesman, while her mother, Claire, was a homemaker who had emigrated from Russia.

Cannon was raised in her mother’s Jewish faith. She has a younger brother, David, who became a jazz musician.

During her teenage years, Cannon attended West Seattle High School. After graduating, she studied at the University of Washington for two and a half years.

Her interest in entertainment eventually led her toward television and acting. She began appearing on television programs during the late 1950s before moving into feature films.

    Early Acting Career

Cannon made her feature film debut in 1960 in The Rise and Fall of Legs Diamond. Around the same period, she began securing television roles.

She appeared on the CBS Western series Johnny Ringo and the ABC Western Stoney Burke. In 1961, she had a guest role on Bat Masterson, another popular Western television series.

Cannon later expanded her work beyond television and film by appearing on stage. She joined the national touring production of the Broadway musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

These early roles helped Cannon gain experience across several areas of entertainment before she achieved wider recognition in Hollywood.

    Breakthrough in Film

Cannon’s major film breakthrough came in 1969 when she starred in Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice. She appeared alongside Natalie Wood, Elliott Gould and Robert Culp in the Paul Mazursky comedy-drama.

Her performance as Alice earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. The nomination established Cannon as a major film performer and opened the door to more prominent roles.

The actress remained busy during the early 1970s. In 1971 alone, she appeared in five films, including Doctors’ Wives, The Love Machine, The Anderson Tapes, The Burglars and Such Good Friends.

Her performance in Such Good Friends also earned her a Golden Globe nomination.

In 1973, Cannon starred opposite Burt Reynolds in Shamus. She also appeared in the neo-noir mystery The Last of Sheila. The following year, she took a leading role in the drama Child Under a Leaf.

    Oscar-Nomination

One of the most important achievements of Cannon’s career came in 1976 with Number One.

Cannon wrote, produced, directed and edited the short film. The project earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Live Action Short Film.

Her nomination was notable because she became the first actress who had previously received an acting Oscar nomination to also receive a nomination in the Best Live Action Short Film category.

The achievement demonstrated that Cannon’s talents extended beyond acting. She had also developed skills in screenwriting, producing, directing and editing.

    Heaven Can Wait

Cannon received her third Academy Award nomination in 1978 for her performance in Heaven Can Wait. She played Julia Farnsworth in the fantasy comedy.

The film added another major achievement to Cannon’s acting career and reinforced her reputation as a versatile performer.

That same year, she starred opposite Peter Sellers in Revenge of the Pink Panther, another major production that added to her film credits.

    Film Career in the 1980s

Cannon continued working in film during the 1980s and also demonstrated her singing ability.

In 1980, she starred alongside Willie Nelson and Amy Irving in the romantic drama Honeysuckle Rose. Cannon contributed several songs to the film’s soundtrack, including “Two Sides to Every Story,” “Unclouded Day” and “Loving You is Easier.”

The same year, she starred opposite Robert Blake in the romantic comedy Coast to Coast.

Her other film credits during the decade included Deathtrap, the autobiographical dramedy Author! Author! and Caddyshack II.

Cannon remained active across different genres, moving between comedy, drama and mystery projects.

    Directing and Screenwriting

Cannon expanded her work behind the camera in 1990 when she made her feature film directorial debut with The End of Innocence.

The project was semi-autobiographical, and Cannon took on several roles in its production. She directed the film, wrote the screenplay and starred in it.

The project reflected the broader range of Cannon’s career. While she was best known to audiences as an actress, she had also established herself as a filmmaker through her work as a writer and director.

After The End of Innocence, Cannon appeared in Paul Mazursky’s The Pickle.

During the 1990s, she also appeared in several comedy films, including Allies & Me, That Darn Cat, 8 Heads in a Duffel Bag and Out to Sea.

Her later film credits included Kangaroo Jack and Boynton Beach Club.

    Television Career

Television has been another important part of Cannon’s long career.

During the 1970s, she appeared in television movies including Virginia Hill and Lady of the House. In the following decade, she appeared in the miniseries Master of the Game, based on the novel by Sidney Sheldon.

She also starred in the television films Jenny’s War and Rock & Roll Mom.

Cannon remained active on television throughout the 1990s. Her credits included Jailbirds, Christmas in Connecticut, Beverly Hills Family Robinson, Diamond Girl and The Rockford Files.

She also appeared on established television programs such as Diagnosis: Murder and The Practice.

One of her best-known television roles came on Ally McBeal. Cannon had a recurring role on the legal dramedy from 1997 to 2000.

Her television work continued into the 21st century, with credits including the sitcom Three Sisters and the children’s franchise Thomas & Friends.

    Personal Life

Dyan Cannon’s personal life has often attracted attention because of her marriage to Cary Grant, one of Hollywood’s most famous actors.

Cannon married Grant in 1965. He was 33 years older than her. The couple had one daughter, Jennifer Grant, who was born in 1966.

Cannon and Cary Grant separated in 1967 and officially divorced in 1968. Their relationship became an important part of Cannon’s personal history, particularly because their daughter later wrote about her relationship with her father in the memoir Good Stuff: A Reminiscence of My Father, Cary Grant.

In 1985, Cannon married real estate investor Stanley Fimberg. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1991.

    Family

Cannon’s only child is Jennifer Grant, who followed her parents into entertainment to a limited extent.

Jennifer became an actress and appeared in television programs including Beverly Hills, 90210 and Friends. She later became an author and wrote Good Stuff, a memoir about growing up as Cary Grant’s daughter.

Cannon therefore remains connected to one of Hollywood’s most recognizable family legacies through her daughter and her former marriage to Cary Grant.

    Faith and Interests

Cannon was raised in her mother’s Jewish faith but later came to identify as a born-again Christian.

Away from entertainment, she has been a longtime fan of the Los Angeles Lakers. She has attended the team’s games for more than three decades, making basketball one of her notable personal interests.
