The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has provided an update on investigations into the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old boy in Mombasa County on New Year’s Eve.

In a statement, IPOA said investigations into the death of Dennis Ringa Swaleh are at an advanced stage. The boy was shot at Utange–Swale Nguru Shopping Centre in Kisauni Sub-county.

The authority launched the investigation on January 2, 2026, following the incident.

IPOA said it has already interviewed key witnesses, including police officers and members of the public, and recorded their statements. Investigators have also collected and preserved evidence from the scene, as well as relevant police documents.

IPOA officers attended the postmortem examination conducted on January 5, 2026, as part of the ongoing probe.

The authority said more witnesses will be interviewed in the coming days, while some of the evidence collected will be submitted for ballistic examination.

“The Authority condoles with the family and friends of the deceased and prays that they find solace during this difficult time,” IPOA said.

Once investigations are completed, IPOA said it will forward the investigation file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) with recommendations on whether any police officers involved should face charges.
