A 30-year-old man was shot and killed by gunmen as he left a funeral vigil in a village in Kehancha, Migori County.

Mourners at the event pursued and caught up with one of the attackers and stoned him to death in the Tuesday January 20 night incident, police said.

The motive of the shooting was not immediately known. Police said Bernard Musaba was walking to his home from the funeral event when he was confronted by three men who were riding on a motorcycle. The men were armed with an AK-47 rifle and crude weapons.

They shot him in the head, chest and legs killing him on the spot. Mourners at the event heard the gunshots and responded by pursuing the gang.

Police said they caught up with one of the suspects and lynched him adding he had two identification cards with different names.

Three spent cartridges were found at the scene, police said adding the bodies were moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and identification.

A team was sent to the area to pursue the other gunmen who managed to escape leaving behind their motorcycle.

The area has been experiencing a rise in violent crime amid calls to address the menace.

Special squads were sent to the area to investigate the attacks.

Meanwhile, gunmen shot and wounded two people in an attack in Marich, West Pokot County.

One of the victims was shot in the stomach while the second one was hit in the right ankle.

The two were on a motorcycle from Lami Nyeusi to Sarmach when they were ambushed, police said.

They were rushed to the hospital and admitted in a serious condition. The police said they had sent teams to the area to pursue the gunmen.

In Mlolongo, Machakos County, police shot to the air to stop a motorist who had tried to drive off without paying for fuel at a petrol station.

The motorist was questioned and claimed he had declined to pay because the attendant did not provide him with an ETR receipt.
