A former Recce Squad officer who doubled up as President Uhuru Kenyatta’s escort has turned into a manual worker after he was dismissed from the service in 2016.

The officer identified as Nicholas Langat, has reportedly turned to crushing stones at a local quarry in Kericho to sustain his drinking habits.

The 28-year old, was reportedly dismissed for absconding duty.

Reports indicate that he had traveled home to take care of his wife who was suffering from cancer.

Langat’s life is said to have taken a new twist after his wife succumbed to the disease, leaving behind a two-year-old daughter.

The officer decided to take care of the young baby left behind, and is said to have developed depression thereafter which led him to alcoholism.

A local media outlet recently caught up with the highly trained officer who had now turned an alcoholic.

The officer is trained in intelligence gathering, protection of VVIPs, recognition and destruction of explosives and guarding vital security installations.

According to Langat, he first learnt of the government’s move after he was handed a suspension letter sent to Ainamoi Police Station in Kericho County, in his rural home.

According to him, the suspension meant that he was not dismissed; he remained a police officer and could therefore not be employed anywhere else.

He said the suspension had left him with no choice but to engage in manual jobs in the village to cater for the needs of his daughter, aged parents as well as catering for his bottle needs.

Overly remorseful Langat revealed to the local daily that alcohol has destroyed his life and is now willing to get on his feet again and possibly return to the service.

“I have gone through hell due to drinking and I feel that I’m tired of this life. I would love to go back to my normal life and get back my job if possible,” he told the Nation.

His revelations came after meeting Sgt Moses Kimenchu who counsels drug and alcohol addicts.

Kimenchu told the local daily that the highly skilled officer needed urgent intervention since he is in his sixth stage of addiction.

“I have been able to contain him and he has accepted himself and has seen the need to mend his ways. But he is in a bad state. He requires immediate medical attention and I call upon well-wishers to chip in before his case goes out of hand,” Kimenchu said.

Kimenchu noted: “He is very determined to quit drinking and his determination has seen him visit me in Murang’a to see how he can secure admission to a rehab but this is yet to happen.”
