The body of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has arrived at the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Mamboleo, Kisumu, for public viewing, marking a solemn moment in Kenya’s national mourning.
The body was airlifted from Kisumu International Airport to the stadium, a move that caught many of his supporters by surprise. Thousands had camped at the airport expecting the convoy to travel by road.
Raila’s remains arrived in Kisumu early Saturday morning aboard a military helicopter, which touched down at 7:20 a.m. under tight security.
Security agencies, including the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the National Police Service, have been deployed to maintain order and ensure safety during the public viewing. Authorities have appealed to mourners to remain calm, observe peace, and honour the late leader’s legacy with dignity.
The public viewing is one of several national events celebrating Raila Odinga’s remarkable contribution to Kenya’s democracy and political transformation.
On Friday night, thousands of Kisumu residents held a candle-lit vigil across the city, singing liberation songs, carrying flowers, and lighting candles as they awaited the arrival of his body.
Initially, the viewing was scheduled to take place at Moi Stadium, but the venue was later shifted to the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Mamboleo following changes to the funeral itinerary.
Raila’s body will later be taken to his rural home at Opoda Farm in Bondo, Siaya County, where he will be buried on Sunday beside his late mother at Kang’o ka Jaramogi.
Only close family members and a few invited guests will attend the private burial ceremony, in accordance with Raila’s personal wishes. Security has been heightened around Opoda Farm as final preparations continue for the burial of one of Kenya’s most influential political leaders.
