Two fishermen are missing after a patrol boat operated by Beach Management Unit (BMU) security personnel capsized following an attack by suspected fishermen on Lake Victoria in Homa Bay County.
The incident occurred at about 2am on Thursday, October 8, 2026, within a restricted fish breeding area near Thuru Beach, Suba North Sub-County.
According to police the BMU security team from Thuru Beach was conducting patrols when they were attacked by suspected fishermen from Oginga in Homa Bay.
The attackers allegedly pelted the patrol team with stones and assaulted them with pangas before vandalising the boat’s Yamaha 40-horsepower engine and throwing it into the lake.
Four members of the patrol team managed to escape by swimming towards the lake shore.
However, two remained missing Friday, with a search operation underway to recover them.
Police were at the scene monitoring the situation.
Police have launched investigations into the attack as the search for the two missing fishermen continues.
Cases where fishermen venture into restricted areas have been on the rise amid calls for respect to the law and ban.
Elsewhere, a 65-year-old man who had been missing for two days was found dead after drowning in River Moiben in Soy, Uasin Gishu County.
Johnson Arusei went missing on October 6, 2026. His body was discovered on Thursday, October 8, at around 8am in the river near Kapsigot Village.
Police officers visited the scene and established during preliminary investigations that Arusei may have slipped while attempting to cross the river using a fallen tree.
The scene was processed and photographed before the body was retrieved and moved to Racecourse Hospital mortuary for preservation and an autopsy.
The circumstances surrounding the drowning are being investigated.
