CBK Warns Against Using Banknotes in Cash Flower Bouquets and Displays

The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has warned the public against using banknotes to make cash flower bouquets, decorative displays and similar arrangements.

In a statement issued on February 2, 2025, CBK said such practices damage Kenya shilling banknotes. The bank noted that in many cases, the notes are folded, rolled, glued, taped or stapled when being used for decorations.

“Such practices compromise the integrity of Kenya shilling banknotes and render them unsuitable for circulation,” CBK said.

The bank explained that the use of adhesives, pins, staples and other fastening materials damages banknotes and affects the proper functioning of cash-handling machines. These include ATMs, cash-counting machines and currency-sorting equipment.

CBK said damaged notes are often rejected by machines, leading to early withdrawal and replacement of currency. This, the bank added, results in avoidable costs to both the public and the Central Bank.

However, CBK clarified that it does not oppose the use of cash as a gift. It said such gifts should be given in a way that does not alter, damage or deface banknotes.
