Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja Friday announced the exemption of medical fees for persons affected by the destructive fire that occurred in Embakasi on Thursday night. Sakaja, while sympathising with the affected, said the exemption of medical fees applies exclusively to public county hospitals. “Currently, all County Health and Medical teams are also managing the situation and also working hand in hand with the County Disaster and Risk management teams who continue to provide the necessary support to the victims of the fire incident,” said Sakaja in the statement. The death toll in the Embakasi fire tragedy has risen to three people, Deputy Inspector General of police Douglas Kanja said. “We have three fatalities so far and our teams are still checking here,” he said. Police are investigating an incident in which suspected thugs broke into the National Registration Bureau office in Narok County and stole computers. The incident happened on Wednesday night. Staff at the offices at the Central District office said they reported only to find the main door broken. A fire incident at an Embakasi gas company has left scores injured and two dead. Reports indicate that 167 victims have so far been treated at Mama Lucy Hospital in Nairobi; 142 adults and 25 children, many with inhalation injuries. About 7 of the critically injured victims have been referred to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) and 17 others to Kenyatta University hospital. The Defence ministry Thursday launched the National Peace Operations Support Fund, an autonomous kitty whose sole purpose will be to finance peace operations outside the country.

The fund was approved by Parliament and ratified by Cabinet last year.  The move means the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) will no longer rely on the National Treasury to finance its peace missions abroad.

A court in Kithimani, Machakos County Wednesday sentenced two suspects to pay a fine of Sh20 million each and in default to serve 10 years imprisonment for the offence of being in possession of seven python skins and two crocodile skins. Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti Wednesday ordered investigations into the attack and mistreatment of Members of County Assembly (MCAs) by county enforcement officers. Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter over the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Police in Canada are investigating the bizarre theft of a taxidermy polar bear weighing some 500lb (225kg) from a resort near Edmonton. The bear, standing some 12ft (3.6m) tall, is believed to have been snatched during the cold snap in early January with temperatures near -30C (-22F).
